Many of the people living in Beaufort County struggle with health issues, including hypertension and type 2 diabetes – with 15% of adults over 20 years old in Beaufort County having diabetes, and 35% of adults being obese. These things could be consequences of the diets of many of the inhabitants of Beaufort County as a result of the lack of access to healthier food options, but can also be attributed to a lack of active living.
Farmers Markets: Filling the Gap
In a country as wealthy as the United States, it is easy to overlook the problem of food insecurity here. However, to do so would be doing a large population of our country a disservice. The US Department of Agriculture reports that 1 in 6 Americans don’t have enough to eat.
